I was impressed with the considerable amount of inventory on the floor, as well as online access, within the store, to other furniture companies for special orders. The digital screen was HUGE 5 ft, so it made looking at inventory so easy! Gareth was very pleasant and informative. It was my pleasure to support a local, family owned 4th generation business.

I highly recommend this furniture store. Wonderful people and fabulous customer service. They had a year end sale, but closed down just before Christmas and through the new year. Luckily they responded to an email and easily honored December sale prices in January. This store has been in business for 97 years and I can see why. I felt like family walking in the door the first time. More than one person came out to talk story, ask me about myself and how long I’ve been living here on the Big Island. This is some of the first furniture I bought since moving to the big island. I will definitely be back.

Supporting our long time local businesses in Hilo is our “go to” motto. And each time we do, we are deeply gratified. Places like Yamada furniture have been around for generations, and in this day and age of “big box” everything, our places of commerce are changing and being taken over completely by big box business. There is certainly a need for both. I get it. The thing is though, that unless we deliberately support our local line of business by visiting and buying from them, the loyal and long time smaller stores cannot survive. We were helped by Gareth Makino (generationally a Yamada son) from the second I reached out via email from Oahu. We bought property in Hilo where I grew up and wanted to furnish our home with affordable, quality based, and modern feel furniture. After shopping around, we chose Yamada, and found that and more with Gareth at Yamada furniture. We visited the store on line and in person over the last 6 months and have been treated fairly but more importantly like family. It’s the kind of service that invites warmth and love that is genuinely appreciated when furnishing a home. At first glance, the price point might have seemed higher than driving to Kona or getting it from another big box store but what we received in efficient, personal handling as well as complimentary items, made up for the difference in leaps and bounds. We whole-heartedly recommend purchasing from Yamada furniture because their personal “one on one” customer service was the way chose to complete our home in order to keep our family comfortable and happy for generations to come.
