I want to express my extreme dissatisfaction with my experience purchasing a mattress from American Mattress on Woodward in Birmingham.
In May, during your Memorial Day sale, I purchased a mattress totaling nearly $4,000. Despite the significant cost, I did not receive the mattress until the end of September—over three months later. Throughout that period, there was a complete lack of communication or updates regarding the delay, and I ultimately had to reach out myself, frustrated and unhappy, just to get basic information about my order.
After expressing my concerns, I was assured that I would receive my mattress soon. A mattress was delivered, but to my shock, it was a USED MATTRESS BEING SOLD AS NEW. Even the delivery personnel acknowledged it was used and questioned why I would be receiving such a product. I refused delivery immediately, and the mattress was taken back on the spot.
To make matters worse, it then took the company over six weeks—approximately a month and a half—to process and return my refund. The lack of urgency and professionalism throughout this experience has been unacceptable.
I am disgusted by the service I received and appalled that a company in this community would operate in such a manner. Selling and delivering a USED MATTRESS as new is completely unacceptable, and the extended delays and poor communication made the situation even worse.

Needed a new mid range mattress for my teenage son. Ronnie instantly greeted us as we walked into the store which is very clean and has a good vibe for a mattress store. He is extremely knowledgeable and friendly. We were presented with a range of mattresses and Ronnie was very cool and helpful with finding us a mattress in our price range. I highly recommend this location to anyone looking to buy a mattress. If you find one elsewhere they will even price match it so there's no reason not to buy local.

Hastens USED to make an amazing pillow, for which, about 15 years ago, I paid $200 after a physical therapist recommended it. She was so convinced it would help my particular neck issue that she drove one back from Chicago (formerly, the closest place to Detroit for purchasing Hastens' products) for me when she was visiting her daughter there. So, of course, I had to pay what I thought was a crazy price!
Earlier this year, I decided to splurge on a replacement for me and one for my husband. Was thrilled to learn that American Mattress, a few miles away, was selling Hastens products. And the American Mattress Store Manager, Ronnie, was very nice when I visited the store.
But American Mattress did not have the pillow in stock, and it had to be ordered. And, it turned out that I needed knowledge more than nice. Especially as the pillows are much more expensive now: $1,215.99 for two.
Sarah, the Hasten's representative at the Birmingham American Mattress store was not available to take the order, did not confirm the order as Ronnie had promised she would when she returned, and did not initially respond to my inquiry asking her to confirm the order, or later, when the order did not arrive for over twice as long as promised (which had been "3 - 4 weeks").
When the pillows finally arrived . . . they looked as I expected--same blue-and-white checked pillowcase, same accompanying travel case, same unusual pillow construction (only one Hastens pillow was constructed this way, coming with two pressure-relieving cylinders).
But the pillows seemed flatter. Was there something I was supposed to do after removing them from the box? No instructions. So onto the bed and under our heads they went.
My husband did not make it through his first night sleeping on the pillow, After one night on mine, I knew they were definitely not the pillow I'd thought I had purchased. And, I gave up after three; my neck was KILLING me.
When the Hastens sales representative from American Mattress did not respond to my inquiries re: my puzzlement, I reached out to Hastens Customer Online Support.
A response did not come within 48 hours. Persisting, I finally heard back after 25 DAYS.
And there was a relatively simple explanation, and I quote: "The current pillow named 'therapeutical pillow' is not the same as the anatomical you had before. The current pillow came to the assortment back in 2017 and replaced the anatomical pillow. The new version has a different filling recipe and are less filled than the old one and then changed name to therapeutic pillow. We have another pillow in our assortment called 'Hästens firm extra high' that have similar filling weight as the old anatomical pillow."
These facts would have been wonderful to have known BEFORE I made the worst investment in any product I have ever purchased in my lifetime.
Hastens suggested I talk to their representative at the store from which I bought the pillow. When I explained how that poorly that had repeatedly gone, I was ghosted.
Bottom line: Expecting the best-ever, I got the very worst. And, yes, perhaps I deserved it: Who pays that much for a pillow?
But, the original Hastens (anatomical) pillow helped save me from a recommended neck surgery and let me sleep again after a lot of sleepless painful nights.I raved about that pillow! The first, the "anatomical" Hastens pillow was a fantastic investment!
However, now I have two brand-new "therapeutic" (which are anything but) pillows sitting on a shelf in my closet. and after 6 months of waiting for some kind or response, I've not even received an apology for being misled and wasting my money. The pillows are destined for the SOCCRA Recycling Center. (Because a pillow is a bedding item, even a cat rescue shelter will refuse them.)
BEWARE of buying Hastens products from American Mattress. And if you're trying to replace a wonderful but older Hastens pillow, order DIRECTLY from Hastens, so you actually get what you think you’re paying for!

Ronnie was amazing! Very knowledgeable about all the products, helped us decided
what was best for our needs. He didn’t try to “oversell” us like other places we have gone. Can’t wait for our new mattress to come!
